German racing team Edlinger has transformed the hybrid BMW i8

The German racing team Edlinger has unveiled a unique version of the hybrid sports car BMW i8, set to replace their previously used hill climb racer, the BMW E30 with an IndyCar V8 engine. The main feature of this modified i8 is its powertrain: the car is equipped with four inline four-cylinder engines of 999 cc each from the BMW HP4 Race motorcycle, while the factory model comes with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder hybrid system producing 357 hp.

The combined power of these engines reaches an impressive 880 hp, notable for a vehicle weighing just 998 kg. The complex electronic system and titanium exhaust allow the engines to sound like the old BRM V16 race car.

The chassis of the racing BMW i8 is designed according to Formula 1 standards. The cabin, borrowed from LMP1, is reinforced with carbon polymer and honeycomb aluminum structures. The car features ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear, as well as adjustable Sachs shock absorbers. The aerodynamic body kit, developed by Edlinger, ensures optimal downforce at the front and efficiency at the rear.
