Ford F-150 Lightning turned into an electric rally car

The engineering team at Ford, in collaboration with the tuning studio RTR Vehicles, has developed an extreme version of the Ford F-150 Lightning. This modified pickup, named Sweitchgear, will participate in the off-road King of Hammers race, set to take place next week in California. Ford considers this project a «testing ground» for developing and refining the brand's future electric vehicles. Unlike the standard F-150, the rally version is equipped with specially designed bumpers, a significantly widened track, and increased ground clearance. Under its expanded wheel arches are wide wheels with 37-inch off-road tires. The exterior of the rally F-150 Lightning is decorated in a Ford Performance livery reminiscent of the racing Mustang GT3.

At the front, the rally car features a double-wishbone suspension, while the rear boasts a multi-link setup with reinforced shock absorbers. Improved approach and departure angles are provided by a front-axle stabilizer bar. Off-road stability of the F-150 Lightning Sweitchgear is ensured by numerous ventilation channels that optimize airflow under the body.

The front fenders and bumper are made of carbon composite, connected by a steel protective plate, and fastened to the suspension with limiting straps, providing protection during off-road driving and jumps. Technical details of the rally pickup have not yet been disclosed. It is expected to perform similarly to the top-tier F-150 Lightning with 563 hp, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.
